The comparaison functions are generic and can work on almost every type. In the same way you can compare strings, you can compare arrays. It will compare compare each element of the collection until a difference is found.

Why couldn't arrays be compared?

Ah, I guess element-by-element compare makes sense. I was assuming that it did some sort of address comparison. I suppose it is shell-shock from every time in programming 101 in C when I was burned by comparing arrays.
